Step back in time and explore our authentic western mining and railroad heritage! For admirers of the past, our historic towns are an architectural paradise. Our community wasn’t created by a “tourist destination developer” – our heritage is real!  Come stroll down the dirt Main Street of Silver Plume and feel an age gone by come to life! Visit the confluence of Chicago Creek and Clear Creek where the first gold strike took place in Idaho Springs. Clear Creek County is also home to the highest paved road in the Northern Hemisphere, Mount Evans Scenic Byway! This drive begins in Idaho Springs at the Idaho Springs Heritage Museum and USFS Visitor Center at 8,700 feet in elevation and takes you to a miraculous 14,240 feet at the summit parking lot.

Along the way you will encounter three different life zones as you drive past ancient trees, beautiful lakes, wetlands, and forest to the land above timberline where Marmots, Mountain Goats and Bighorn Sheep will greet you! Once you arrive and park in the upper lot simply walk/climb the last 25 or so feet to the summit of Mount Evans.
